Welcome To My Little Slice Of Cyberspace!
I’m Katie Rebekah – a forty-something Aussie citizen with a British accent and deep affinity for family, adventure and this beautiful journey we call life. So far my life journey has brought me from beautiful Britain to where I currently reside, in Perth, Western Australia – where I’ve lived since February 2014.
This relaxed Aussie life/style blog was a happy accident for me – originally conceived as a creative extension of my Instagram @KatieRebekah, coupled with the desire to creatively document my adventures Down Under in Perth-ect WA…
For years I toyed with the idea of setting up a blog of my own. My move to Australia (gorgeous story behind that one) ‘almost’ prompted me to get blog-happy, but then I arrived and… well, just kinda got side tracked with all the amazingness, (beaches and vino) that WA had to offer.
Finding myself in one of the most beautiful places in the world, coupled with my passion for travel, photography and creative writing only served to further bulk-up my Insta feed, with each day spent on the flip side of the hemisphere presenting me with more and more (and more) breathtaking discoveries and memories…
But sometimes a moment captured in a photograph deserves more depth and substance than just a few filters and a witty caption. Living on the other side of the world to my family and friends in Britain only served to further reinforce this. At the time I was being sponsored to work at a Marketing and Advertising agency – where I would stay for three years to secure my Permanent Residency – which I adored… but it didn’t *quite* fulfil me creatively. I needed an outlet to channel my passion and creativity into. And so, on a particularly sunny Wednesday afternoon in the Spring of 2015, I set up my very own slice of cyberspace!
The intention of this little site was always to be a collection of memoirs from living my best life Down Under. But that’s not quite how the story went…
Sure, it was the creative outlet I needed. I love to write – it’s like therapy/escape for me. And if people like to read my ramblings, great! As the site hits and Insta love began coming in hot, so did the sponsorship/contra offers… this was 2015 – influencer marketing was fast emerging, and I was so down for it! It was great fun! Don’t get me wrong, I was never ‘influencer’ status – my Insta clocked about 8.5K at one point (it’s now waaaay less chunky, yet ironically far more authentic 🤣). I stayed true and authentic, kept my clothes on (LOL) and only aligned collaborations or freelancing gigs with brands that resonated with ‘me’; who I wanted to work with and genuinely enjoyed writing about.
It wasn’t just collabs and contra – these accounted for just a handful of posts. The most popular post I ever wrote, The Return To Atlantis has to date clocked up over 10,000 unique hits – growing daily. This, like the majority of my organic posts, was a personal piece I created after hours upon hours of research and adventure surrounding a unique part of the WA landscape that amazed me.
I was loving all the little projects and content creation opportunities that came my way. It gave me some real creative, exciting fulfilment.
But then life happened. I bought a house. Got a dog. Became an Aussie citizen. Dealt with some heartbreaking family losses and health challenges. Landed a gun role leading the brand and creative for one of WA’s leading hospitality groups. I got a boyfriend (haha, finally!), fell in love – got ENGAGED (edit: November 2022 😅) and, well… my priorities shifted. My creativity was being channelled, my cup was full. I was fulfilled.
And just like that, the requests for content became a pressure. It wasn’t fun anymore. ‘Fun’ for me was now landscaping, house renos and trips to Bunnings. I was adulting HARD! This little blog was meant to be fun, not a chore. At one point in early 2019, I caught myself thinking ‘shit – I haven’t written a blog for ages… I need to write about something, ASAP!!’ And just as quickly, decided I needed a break.
I needed a break from myself. It is you, it’s me.
And so after four years of editing the site, I drafted my final blog post in February 2019, and dropped. the. mic.
The monthly hosting fees kept rolling in and I kept paying them – never quite having the heart to delete the blog, I always knew I’d revisit it at some point. I was just on a break, that’s all.
One of my proudest moments to come out of this blog was landing my ambassadorship role with Perth’s leading hair legends, Maurice Meade in 2016. It’s a dream come true to be a part of the Maurice Meade family and feature in their epic campaigns – mum loses her shit every time I’m featured in their salon windows, prompting a road-trip to all eight of their salons across the state.
In the end, I took a three year (not-so) mini-break between 2019-2022 to focus on life and all the creative fulfilment it threw at me.
It’s given me time to reassess what I really want to write about. Following a little 2022 refresh, and a few retro-posts added in-between, I’ll now edit my little slice of cyberspace as and when I wish – on my terms. There will be no posting consistency, and it’s probably going to be about what I’m currently reading tbh… and that’s okay. It’s not like anyone but my mom reads it anyway.
As always, all ramblings continue to be those of the voices in my head (i.e. they’re my own) and I hope you enjoy!
Katie 🤍
