I just had to share these pictures from some twilight sailing I did on the Swan River recently – aren’t they gorgeous?
Me and some of the guys from work set sail from the Royal Perth Yacht Club just after 6pm after work one evening and set sail along the river until dusk set in around an hour and a half later. We even participated in a race – which we didn’t win. But it’s totally the participation that counts, right?
Sailing was both fun and terrifying at the same time… We were surrounded by loads of avid sailors as we zipped along the Swan River through wild winds and crazy currents (RIVER?! Ha, it was basically the ocean), and I was absolutely convinced we were going to tip over. In fact, I’m still not having it that the sailboat wouldn’t tip. Heavy lead keel counterweights? Whatever. That water got VERY close to the edge of the boat at times!
But we had an absolute blast – it was so exhilarating to be out on the open water. It’s possible that the sparkly glass(es) of champagne *may* have helped me come to this conclusion – along with the comforting fact that I could see land at all times. I was paranoid about my iPhone (and dignity) going overboard, but still managed to snap some awesome shots. Oh, and have you tried the Matsos Pearlers Pale Ale? I’m not usually a beer drinker, Matso’s Ginger Beer excepted (obsessed), but this was just delicious – and so perfectly appropriate for the event too.
Seeing the iconic Perth skyline peeking out between the sails and slowly beginning to glitter as twilight set in was just magical – and everyone knows that Perth knows how to throw a sensational sunset… Just check out those lavender and grapefruit tones running through the evening sky. Just gorgeous.
Would I go sailing again? I actually think I would – now I know what to expect. That’s providing champagne was readily available on ice. Ideally poured by some hot sailors…
Yep, sailing definitely floats my boat.
