As an early adopter of social media, I’ve worked as a social media manager/strategist for almost a decade. I’ve always loved social – and I’m bloody good at it. Hell, I’m paid to do it full-time! And so it’s high time I explored my next challenge…
There are so many people out there claiming to be social experts, many running successful, collective workshops mostly for all levels of Social Media competency, which is great – if you’re after a day of knowledge sharing with a group ranging in objectives and social-capabilities – think highly skilled Social Media ninjas right through to the more socially awkward, ‘wait, what’s Business Manager..?’
I recently attended some training when it dawned on me – I didn’t give a crap about Lauren’s persistent problems with trolls, or Tim’s 392nd question about algorithms… Sorry Lauren and Tim. All I wanted to get out of the day was advice and guidance (ANSWERS!) with my challenges. I wanted to learn, relate and shimmy my ass back into the office come Monday and make shit happen.
Selfish? I don’t think so.
Don’t get me wrong – group training sessions like this aren’t bad. Sometimes other participant’s problems or questions can be relatable and more often than not, the day becomes an inspirational, open-mic floor for problem-solving. Yay, high-fives all round. But how often, after attending a course do you: one find the entire day relevant? two continue to feel empowered and driven after you head back to work the next day only to be met with a barrage of emails to be actioned, dramas to be resolved and clients being all needy and stuff? (My hand is firmly in the air BTW.) Before you know it, your sparkly, fresh and inspired intentions are trampled to the bottom of your *fictional* in-tray. Okay, that’s worst-case scenario, but you get me.
I just feel there’s a gap in the market for a more tailored, exclusive approach to Social Media learning: namely one-on-one collaboration and empowerment. Tailored, “it’s all about me!” experiences with inspiration that continues sparkle weeks after initial training takes place.
I may not have 50,000 Instagram followers, a zillion likes on my Facebook page or an envious following on Twitter (although I am followed by Vanilla Ice and Yoko Ono!) – but that’s because I enjoy being social on social, which anyone can do, quite averagely. And that’s okay. Social should be enjoyed without KPIs and strategic measures… with maybe just a small dollop of ROI. Who doesn’t love a few cheeky likes or commentary on their posts? Right. Social is my passion, along with writing, travel and photography, which were the key foundations for launching my blog in 2015 as my creative outlet for when work gets a little intense.
Career wise? I live, breathe and sleep social media for my employers and clients. That’s when you can call me out for following and engagement. KPIs, ROI (although I find Return On Spend to be more accurate for social measurement), advertising and timely, curated content all work in synergy to create the ultimate social eco-system – which is the successful foundation for implementing and executing any successful Social Media strategy. I have been doing this every day for the past eight years – and after working in the digital space for almost fifteen years, I can consider a more holistic and collaborative approach to your brand’s overarching digital strategy. I’ve kicked Social Media goals for some iconic global and emerging local brands both sides of the hemisphere, some of which are listed in my Brand Portfolio below/right.
So yeah – I wanted to make my consulting/freelancing a little more official – and I’m excited about working with the good folk of Perth …and beyond! Working in Social Media can be bittersweet. Sure, I get to play on Instagram all day (well, there’s a *little* more to it than that), but I also regularly get asked to help people out. Do I have any advice or recommendations for a friend’s-sister’s-boyfriend’s-brother’s company? Can I help them with their Social Media activity? It’s a compliment, it truly is! But also frustrating as I always feel obliged to help (even though I wouldn’t dream of asking my friend’s-sister’s-boyfriend’s-brother’s company who specialise in, let’s say ‘aircon’ to come and fix my ‘aircon’ for free…) – but now I have this swell page to direct people to, so that’s that problem solved hehe.
You won’t find glossy handouts, powerpoint presentations and printed workbooks from me – I can’t be fucked with all that fluff and bubble. I’d rather spend that time immersing myself within your brand. What I can promise you is that I will commit my heart and soul into empowering you to confidently develop your brand (and mad skillz) on Social Media through either one off or regular collaborative workshops (and follow up sessions to check in and help out if needed!). So have a squizz below to see what I can help with. It’s an ever-evolving list that still doesn’t cover everything off… But trust me, I’ve done it all.
Probably more than twice.
