The Cherry On Top!

04.04.2017

Okay, so I’m no fashion guru. I have no idea what the current trends are, who wore it best – or what the hell will be the craze in 2034. My idea of fashion forward thinking is mixing a floral dress with leopard heels. I know, right? Wild. I've been running this blog for a few years now, and this is actually the first fashion focussed post I've ever written... I'm sorry. Stay with me!

After three years of working at a gorgeous Advertising and Marketing creative agency, last week I bid a very emotional farewell to agency life. It was a tough decision to make - but all good things must come to an end and I decided to spread my wings and begin a fresh new adventure client-side! Next week I start my new role, heading up Social Media for an iconic WA company and I'm beyond excited to take my passion, career and experience to the next level.

Being a little more corporate in how I dress however... Oh, how I'm going to miss my ripped up boyfriend jeans and Birkenstocks! It's time to cast aside the denim, comfy (un-ironed) shirts and Havi's (weep!) in favour of a little more tailoring and professional pieces.

Thanks to my lucky stars, my girlfriends at Popcherry were able to come to the rescue...

Okay, let me just start this post off by pointing out that I’m no fashion guru. I have no idea what the current trends are, who wore it best – or what the hell will be the craze in 2034. My idea of fashion forward thinking is mixing a floral dress with leopard heels (see below!) I know, right? Wild.

Yes, I have an appreciation of fashion – the younger version of me was actually quite passionate about fashion, designers and all that glitters – I studied fashion design for two years (grade A student right here people), and walked several catwalks back in my modelling days in the Big Smoke (London, baby!) prior to focussing all my efforts on my Psych & Media degree. Before uni, I worked at a designer clothes store and would think nothing of blowing an entire pay check on a Miu Miu clutch and sequinned bikini – after getting my 30% staff discount of course. Now? Now I wear what I like the look of, and if I’m being completely honest, because yes, I’m getting on a bit – I wear what’s comfy and affordable (urgh, mortgages). If it happens to look good, that’s just a bonus. Yes, I have a couple of expensive bags and a few designer pieces hanging in my closet, but it otherwise consists of cute staples from high street stores that I’ve built up over the years from brands all over the world. In fact, some of my most treasured possessions include a vintage faux fur jacket and pair of burgundy (wanky fashion term = ‘oxblood’) leather boots which I bought from a Parisian market for like 100 francs back in ’99.

Moving over to Aussie totally changed my wardrobe. Even after having suitcases shipped over from Britain after I wore AS MUCH AS I COULD on my initial flight over here (think Joey from Friends wearing every item of clothing Chandler owns… and substitute image with size 8 chick faking a size 16 chick whilst trying not to look *too* dodgy on an international Emirates flight to Aussie), I’d say 50% of what I brought over has now been gifted to girlfriends or taken to the op-shop. The style here is so much more chill – I find myself wearing much more looser, cooler fabrics with a far more relaxed style than in Blighty. Aside from the relentless Perth heat, I think a lot of this has been influenced by working in a creative agency environment too. Sure, I would get dressed up for work if I was client-facing, but behind the scenes I was always casual as (with a range of stilettos stashed under my desk for emergencies).

After three years of working at a gorgeous (gorgeous!) Advertising and Marketing creative agency, last week I bid a very emotional farewell to agency life. It was a tough decision to make – but all good things must come to an end and I decided to spread my wings and begin a fresh new adventure client-side! Next week I start my new role, heading up Social Media for an iconic WA company. I’m beyond excited for this new challenge and opportunity to take my passion, career and experience to the next level.

Being a little more corporate in how I dress however… Oh, how I’m going to miss my ripped up boyfriend jeans and Birkenstocks! I’m not talking like fully suited-and-booted errrry damn day, but I recognise it is time to cast aside the denim, comfy boyfriend shirts and Havi’s (weep!) in favour of a little more tailoring and professional pieces for my chic working week wardrobe.

And so, about two weeks ago I had a little panic – not only did I lose Thor (again) under the excessive mountains of clothes I had yanked from my closet – but I literally couldn’t piece more than a weeks worth of outfits together that could even slightly pass as office wear. HOWEVER, thanks to my lucky stars, my girlfriends at Popcherry came to the rescue!

Whilst browsing their 2,000+ strong product offering online, I wanted to pick out a few key pieces which I could easily introduce to my wardrobe, whilst injecting a little dose of professional-oomph (whatever that is – I just know I want some of it) to my professional working wardrobe. To say it was hard to stay focussed is an understatement (they have sooooo many relaxed, casual designs!) – but, I must say, I think I made the right choices…

I love, love, love this combo. This hybrid sweater/shirt is super comfortable, offering a luxe, layered look without the fuss. Teamed up with the sleek, refined and just-so-awesomely-named ‘Girl Boss’ cigarette pants, and finished up with my favourite heels, this chic look is hands-down my favourite choice of all!

The self-tie fabric waist belt and rounded hemline allow for natural flow and movement – coupled with my weakness for a floral print, this loose-fitting dress really is every girls NBF.
